I’ve been listening to some fun and knowledgable podcasts at work lately. From the ‘Outdoor Journal Radio’ team to the ‘Average Anglers’, the ‘Woman Angler’, ‘Ugly Pike’ and last but not least, ‘Doc Talks Fishing’. These podcasts provide huge insight and perspective on fishing and the outdoors and many things that I learn this way have peaked my interest. So much so that I am fully caught up on each.
On episode 5 of Doc Talks Fishing, they talk about the importance of the eggs from big fish compared to small ones and how old big fish really are. For example, he mentions that three 4lb fish yield less eggs than one 12lb’er. In other words, big fish create more eggs. The quality and survival rate of the eggs from big fish are also higher. This is true for most species like bass, walleye, and pike. Not to mention your 40” pike is probably over 20 years old.
Maybe these older fish are teaching the younger ones about best spawning grounds and frequently seen lures? Something to ponder. 🤔

There’s a First for Everything!
This week back in April was such an adventure!! I’ve never fished the ocean with my own equipment and never caught an ocean fish!!
First I needed to figure out how to find bait here. After talking to some bajans at the beach, I learnt how to catch sea crabs (aka ‘cockerel’- a whole other story🙌🏻) and how to set up my line to handle the fast current& display my bait as it should. It was a 2 hook set-up with a 6oz weight, 20lb mono leader on swivel and it worked like a charm. Without their help It would’ve taken me much longer to figure this out. Thank you Stephen, Taffy and Cooper.
After about an hour of learning how to feel waves vs bites, I caught one! It’s crazy how happy this little fish made me. The feeling of learning something new and having success in it is so rewarding. Expanding the brain pathways is so important. I learnt some new techniques that I will be able to move over to more new skills in the future. A few days later I came back to try again! Caught another about the same size. I’m so proud of these tiny fish! And I can’t wait to learn another set up next time I’m at the ocean. My 4-piece rod will come in handy next year too. 🌊 🎣 Bless this fish.
Have you ever caught an ocean fish? 👀🐠

COMING UP- Paddlesport Get Together 2024
Last year I attended my first Paddlesport Get together organized by Peter Yeung. Highly recommend joining this year on September 7!
The adventure started with a parking lot car camp accompanied by most of the people pictured. (First time sleeping in my car😂✔️) The rest joined in the morning where first, donated food was collected and raffle tickets sold. The entire group had lots of time to prepare themselves and set up their kayaks and do everything before take off.
After some group photos the bells went and off we dispersed all different directions to fish our friendly tourney! Was cool to see like 60 kayaks racing out of a launch.
Despite not winning anything myself it was amazing to see all the awesome prizes being handed out to fellow outdoor enthusiasts. And the water... What a beautiful lake Six Mile is to boat, swim or fish on. It had its extra charm since I hadn’t been there before. Haha.
I’m excited to gain knowledge from some experienced anglers once again and of course, paddle and fish another new water at this years #paddlesportgettogether . So much to learn on a day like this.🎣✔️
Visit the paddlesportgettogether page on Instagram or message Peter if you want to attend! Can’t wait.😎
